HOW WE WORK

The Association of Litigation Funders comprises thirteen funder members and six associate members. A funder can only be approved as a member of the ALF if they can demonstrate that they comply with the Code of Conduct in full.

The ALF is funded by the subscriptions of its members, and is led by a board of directors, three of whom were instrumental in the development of the Code of Conduct and were members of the Working Party of the Civil Justice Council that drafted the Code.

Our procedures are transparent and open to scrutiny, and further information on our detailed complaints handling procedures are readily available to claimants and their advisers.

OUR FOUNDING

The ALF was founded in November 2011, and its creation coincided with the launch of the Code of Conduct for Litigation Funders by the Civil Justice Council, an advisory public body, which has a statutory role of advising Government and the judiciary on civil justice in England and Wales.

The creation of the ALF and the Code of Conduct were approved by the Board of the Civil Justice Council, the Master of the Rolls Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, and Lord Justice Jackson. The Code was the result of months of research by a Working Party established by the Civil Justice Council with the participation of stakeholders including lawyers, academics and business interests.

Lord Justice Jackson, who led the Civil Litigation Costs Review published in 2010, recommended self-regulation for the litigation funding industry, by way of a voluntary code of conduct.
